Faced with an ageing population and a sluggish economy, Taiwan undertook economic reforms in 2016 in a quest to regain GDP growth in 2017. This, however, has not sapped consumer confidence with spending forecasted to grow by 26% through 2016/17, offering solid development prospects for retail businesses.
With commercial hubs like Taipei and Taoyuan and a well-developed modern retail infrastructure, the country’s leading players are now addressing current challenges in megacities and capitalising on new opportunities in niche formats. Traditional trade is vanishing in most cities, leaving a fiercely competitive modern trade environment.
